How to Set Up IPTV on Android TV — Xtream Codes Step-by-Step

The living-room remote is where IPTV setups succeed or fail. Tiny on-screen keyboards, forgotten passwords and 3,000 unsorted channels turn “watch the game” into a project. This guide is GridStreamr on Android TV / Google TV only — and the TV app only watches Smart Collections. Install the app, QR-link your phone, open a collection you prepared, and lean back with EPG already mapped.

What you need

• An Android TV or Google TV device (Chromecast with Google TV, Nvidia Shield, Sony/TCL/Hisense Google TV, etc.)
• GridStreamr installed from Google Play on the TV
• A phone with GridStreamr signed in (Android or iPhone) for QR linking
• Authorized Xtream and/or M3U sources added on the phone
• At least one Smart Collection with channels (or VOD) — required for anything to appear on the TV
• Optional: Premium for unlimited collections, full-day EPG, TimeShift, Jellyfin and Home DVR control

Recommended flow (phone first)

Phone: install → add Xtream/M3U → Smart Collection → EPG map
        ↓ sync
TV:    install → QR sign-in → open collection → watch

Typing a 40-character host URL with a D-pad is optional pain. Skip it when you can.

Step 1 — Prepare the library on your phone

1. Install GridStreamr on phone (Android or iOS)
2. Add Xtream and/or M3U
3. Create a Smart Collection named for the living room (Living Room, Sports TV)
4. Add only channels you will actually flip through with a remote
5. Map EPG via Global EPG or keep Xtream provider EPG (add EPG guide)
6. Heart favorites so they surface first on the TV grid

If you skip this step, the TV has nothing to show — Android TV does not open the raw provider dump.

Step 2 — Install GridStreamr on the TV

1. On the TV, open Google Play Store
2. Search GridStreamr
3. Install and launch
4. Prefer Play Store installs over random sideloads for update hygiene

Step 3 — Link the phone with QR

1. On TV, open GridStreamr until the QR / link device screen appears
2. On phone, open GridStreamr signed into your account
3. Scan the QR (or follow the on-screen pairing code if QR is awkward)
4. Confirm the TV shows your account name and synced collections

You should see the same Smart Collections you built on the phone within moments.

Step 4 — Open a Smart Collection on the big screen

1. From the TV home, open your living-room collection
2. Browse by category or favorites
3. Open EPG / Guide to confirm Now/Next looks right
4. Start a known-good channel (news or sports you trust)
5. Confirm audio route (TV speakers vs soundbar HDMI-ARC)

If video starts but audio is missing, check TV input/soundbar first — it is often not the IPTV player.

Step 5 — Remote-friendly playback habits

• Use favorites aggressively — remotes hate 40-page channel lists
• Prefer full-day EPG on Premium for schedule browsing (EPG mapping stays on the phone)
• Premium TimeShift when archive exists: open catch-up from the player, scrub with rewind/FF, return to live
• Premium MultiView: build sessions on phone, launch them on Android TV
• Keep Adult collections behind a PIN on phone before kids get the remote

Step 6 — Jellyfin and Home DVR on the TV (Premium)

Same account, same Premium entitlement — setup stays on the phone:

• Connect Jellyfin on phone, then browse/play those libraries on the TV
• Schedule Home DVR jobs on phone; on TV you can pair the DVR host and play recordings
• Files stay on Mac / Windows / Linux / Docker / NAS — not on the TV’s internal storage
• Use Cloud Relay from the phone when you're away from the home LAN

Common Android TV mistakes

1. Linking the TV before creating a Smart Collection — the app only shows collections
2. Expecting to add sources, edit collections, or map EPG on the TV — that is phone-only
3. Skipping EPG timezone on the phone → “everything is two hours off”
4. Expecting TimeShift on channels with no provider archive
5. Judging buffer quality on congested 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi next to a microwave

Buffering triage on Android TV

1. Another channel works? → that stream/provider issue
2. Phone on the same Wi‑Fi plays fine, TV does not? → TV Wi‑Fi band, Ethernet adapter, or congested 2.4 GHz
3. Ethernet available? Use it on Shield / boxes that support it
4. VPN on the router? Test without it once
5. 4K label streams on a weak uplink? Prefer HD variants in the collection

Living-room checklist (15 minutes)

• TV app installed from Play
• QR linked to the phone account that owns the collections
• At least one Smart Collection exists (TV won’t show raw sources)
• Living Room Smart Collection has ≤ a few dozen channels you care about
• EPG Now/Next correct on three channels
• Favorites pinned
• Parental PIN set if kids use the remote
• One VOD/Jellyfin title tested if you use those features
• No master provider password taped to the TV cabinet
