Smart Collections: Merge IPTV Playlists Without Exposing Credentials

Smart Collections are the organizational heart of GridStreamr. Instead of treating each Xtream account or M3U playlist as a silo, you pull the channels, movies and series you actually want into a single curated list — then stream it, enrich it, record from it or export it without ever handing someone your provider password.

The problem Smart Collections solve

Typical IPTV setups accumulate friction quickly:

• Provider A has sports channels your main line lacks
• Provider B has better movie catalogs but messy channel names
• An M3U backup sits in a folder while the family still uses three different apps
• Sharing a lineup means copy-pasting credentials into group chats — a security nightmare

Smart Collections replace that chaos with a deliberate library. You decide what appears, in what order, under what category names, with what EPG data — independent of how messy the upstream source looks.

The three-step workflow

GridStreamr's homepage distills Smart Collections into three moves that match how people actually curate:

1. Combine

Import any Xtream Codes account or M3U/M3U8 source. GridStreamr auto-maps EPG channels where possible and pulls artwork across providers. Multiple sources can feed one collection — there is no requirement that everything come from a single line.

2. Curate

Inside the Smart Collection editor you can:

• Rename channels and categories for clarity ("BBC One HD" instead of "UK|ENT|BBC1")
• Reorder entries so favorites and family-safe channels surface first
• Assign categories that make sense for your household
• Attach EPG via Manage EPG and GridStreamr Global EPG
• Update logos manually or with AI Live Channels Enrichment (Premium)
• Copy entries to another collection without removing them from the source (v2.2.4+)

Parental controls add another curation layer: mark collections as PIN-protected in Settings → Parental Controls so kids cannot open adult lineups without your 4-digit account PIN.

3. Share

Generate tokenised share links with virtual Xtream credentials. Recipients get secure access; your login stays private. Share directly to another GridStreamr user's @username for one-tap acceptance and push notification, or export M3U Plus and XMLTV URLs for external players.

Free vs Premium limits

Understanding limits helps you plan collections before you hit caps:

Free is genuinely useful for testing one curated lineup — for example a 15-channel sports slice plus a few movie categories. Premium is for households running multiple collections (Kids, Sports, News, Movies) or merging several providers into master lists.

Building your first collection

A practical first session:

1. Connect sources — add your primary Xtream account under Sources, or paste an M3U URL
2. Create the collection — name it something meaningful ("Family Live TV")
3. Long-press to add — from any category, channel, movie or series view, long-press entries to add them quickly
4. Clean up names — rename the worst offenders before anyone else sees the list
5. Manage EPG — open collection settings → Manage EPG → select GridStreamr Global EPG for channels with weak provider guide data
6. Test playback — open Live TV inside the collection and verify streams and guide rows
7. Share if needed — Manage Shares → copy virtual credentials or send to @username

EPG inside Smart Collections

Provider-supplied XMLTV is often incomplete. Smart Collections can attach GridStreamr Global EPG — a catalog covering 50,000+ channels worldwide — so your curated list always has programme data even when the upstream source does not.

Premium unlocks:

• Full-day EPG timeline in the player
• Custom EPG Configuration per channel
• EPG notification alerts for favorites
• XMLTV export URL alongside shared playlists for third-party players

For shared collections, copy the XMLTV URL from Manage Shares → XMLTV details and paste it into TiviMate or Kodi next to the M3U Plus link.

Enrichment and metadata

Smart Collections become easier to browse when names and logos are consistent:

• TMDB (Premium) — match movies and series to posters and metadata using your own free TMDB API key
• AI Live Channels Enrichment (Premium) — standardise live channel names, detect language and quality tags, suggest logos; you review before applying
• OpenSubtitles (Premium) — subtitle search during playback with your free OpenSubtitles account

These are optional polish layers. The collection works without them; enrichment reduces scroll fatigue on large lineups.

Secure sharing in depth

Sharing is where Smart Collections differ from exporting a raw M3U from your provider panel.

Virtual credentials act as an Xtream username and password scoped to the shared collection. Recipients never see your real host URL or main line login. You control:

• Expiration — 24 hours, 7 days, custom or forever
• Revocation — one tap to cut access
• Content scope — share the whole collection or limit what the token exposes
• @username delivery — instant push to another GridStreamr user

External players receive M3U Plus and Xtream-compatible endpoints that resolve to the same virtual credentials. Pair with the exported XMLTV URL for guide data.

Streaming vs exporting

Smart Collections support both workflows:

• Stream in GridStreamr — built-in IPTV player with EPG, TimeShift, MultiView and favorites
• Export to other apps — TiviMate, VLC, Kodi and any Xtream-compatible player via share tokens

Some users keep a master collection in GridStreamr for curation and EPG, then export a read-only share to a TV-first player. Others standardize on GridStreamr everywhere including Android TV.

Combining multiple Xtream providers

Power users often run a primary line plus specialty backups. Smart Collections let you merge them without duplicate app logins:

1. Connect each Xtream account (Premium: unlimited)
2. Pull channels from each into one collection
3. Deduplicate by renaming or ordering — GridStreamr does not silently merge duplicates; you stay in control
4. Attach global EPG to channels whose provider guide differs

Smart Collections are also the scheduling context for Home DVR. Record live channels from a collection to storage you own. The home screen widget pins live channels from a chosen collection and category on iOS and Android.

Who Smart Collections are for

Smart Collections fit you if:

• You manage more than one IPTV source or want one family-facing lineup
• You share access with household members or friends without credential leaks
• You care about EPG accuracy independent of Xtream provider EPG
• You want one app for curation, playback, DVR and Jellyfin (Premium)

They may be more than you need if you watch a single provider through one player and never share — though even then, renaming and EPG mapping often justify one collection.
