Jellyfin Integration — Browse Your Self-Hosted Library in GridStreamr
Connect your Jellyfin media server to GridStreamr Premium. Stream movies and series with rich metadata, live subtitle and audio track switching on iOS, Android, Android TV and Android Auto (AOSP).

Responsible use
GridStreamr does not provide IPTV channels, VOD, or playlists. You bring your own authorized Xtream Codes or M3U sources. You are responsible for complying with applicable terms, licenses, and local law.
Self-hosters often run Jellyfin for movies and series while keeping IPTV on separate apps — jumping between libraries, players and remote controls. GridStreamr Premium Jellyfin integration puts your server library next to Smart Collections so one app covers live TV from your playlists and owned media from your NAS.
What Jellyfin integration adds
After connecting server URL and credentials in GridStreamr:
- Browse movies and series with posters, plots, genres, cast and ratings from Jellyfin
- Stream with the GridStreamr player stack
- Switch subtitle tracks and audio languages live
- Adjust subtitle appearance (size, styling) during playback
- Resume watching syncs with your GridStreamr account across devices
IPTV live TV, EPG and DVR continue to work from Smart Collections — Jellyfin does not replace those sources.

Premium requirement
Jellyfin integration is Premium-only, like TimeShift, full EPG timelines and Home DVR. Free tier remains focused on a single Smart Collection and basic IPTV playback.

Setting up your Jellyfin server connection
Typical steps:
- Ensure Jellyfin is reachable from devices running GridStreamr (LAN or HTTPS reverse proxy)
- Open GridStreamr Settings → Integrations → Jellyfin (exact menu label may vary by version — see documentation)
- Enter server URL, username and password or API key policy your server accepts
- Wait for library sync — large libraries take time on first connect
- Browse movies/series tabs alongside IPTV sources
HTTPS and certificates: use valid TLS on public URLs; self-signed certs may require extra trust configuration on mobile OSes.
Remote access: prefer VPN or reverse proxy with auth rather than exposing Jellyfin admin ports raw to the internet.
Unified watch experience
IPTV side
- Smart Collections merge Xtream/M3U
- Global EPG for schedules
- Optional AI enrichment for live channel names/logos
- Home DVR for recording linear streams to disk
Jellyfin side
- Personal rips, Blu-ray encodes, YouTube archives you legally stored
- Jellyfin's own metadata and trickplay where configured
- Subtitles embedded or sidecar as Jellyfin exposes them
Continue Watching in GridStreamr can span both worlds depending on version — check the changelog for latest sync behavior between IPTV VOD and Jellyfin items.
Subtitles and audio on Jellyfin streams
GridStreamr exposes Jellyfin's available tracks in player controls:
- Pick subtitle language from multiple embedded or external subs
- Change font size live for readability on TV displays
- Switch audio when Jellyfin offers dubs or commentary tracks
This mirrors Jellyfin's flexibility without forcing the official Jellyfin client for every screen in the house.

Jellyfin + IPTV workflow examples
Homelab primary TV
NAS runs Jellyfin and Docker GridStreamr DVR. Living room uses Android TV GridStreamr for:
- Evening movies from Jellyfin
- Live sports from IPTV Smart Collection
- DVR recordings stored on NAS volumes
Travel tablet
Phone connects to Jellyfin over VPN for owned media; IPTV Smart Collection works on cellular when provider allows.
Family separation
Kids Smart Collection (IPTV) PIN-locked via parental controls; Jellyfin kids library separate on server — both browsable in one app with different entry points.
Jellyfin vs TMDB enrichment
| Layer | Source | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Jellyfin integration | Your server libraries | Owned media, personal rips |
| TMDB (Settings → General) | Your free API key | IPTV VOD in Smart Collections |
| AI Live Enrichment | GridStreamr credits | IPTV live channel metadata |
Do not duplicate effort — let Jellyfin metadata serve local files; use TMDB for messy IPTV movie catalogs.
Performance and transcoding
GridStreamr playback may direct-play or trigger Jellyfin transcoding depending on codec, bandwidth and device capabilities — behavior inherits Jellyfin server settings and hardware acceleration you configured (Intel QSV, NVENC, etc.).
For 4K HDR local files, prefer Ethernet on Android TV and direct play profiles in Jellyfin to reduce CPU load on NAS.
Security practices
- Use strong Jellyfin passwords and separate users for household members
- Enable HTTPS on public endpoints
- Do not embed admin credentials in shared screenshots
- GridStreamr stores connection details in your account — protect phone with biometrics
GridStreamr shares for IPTV use virtual credentials; Jellyfin connection remains private to your account, not mixed into IPTV share tokens.
Troubleshooting
Cannot reach server
- Verify URL includes correct port (
8096default) - Test same URL in mobile browser on same network
- Check reverse proxy path headers if using subfolder hosting
Library empty
- Confirm Jellyfin user has library access
- Trigger manual sync / restart app after server-side library scan
Buffering on 4K
- Check Jellyfin dashboard for active transcodes
- Lower remote streaming quality max in Jellyfin user settings
Subtitles missing
- Confirm subtitles exist in Jellyfin admin for that item
- Try alternate subtitle track in player menu
Server-side prep before connecting
On Jellyfin admin, confirm:
- Libraries scanned — empty grids in Jellyfin web mean GridStreamr will mirror empty
- Remote access configured if phones leave LAN (HTTPS reverse proxy recommended)
- Hardware transcoding enabled if clients need it — GridStreamr benefits from the same settings official Jellyfin clients use
- User accounts per household member if you rely on Jellyfin parental ratings; GridStreamr connection uses one login you choose
Optional: dedicate a Jellyfin user "GridStreamr" with library access limited to family-safe folders while IPTV adult categories live only in PIN-locked Smart Collections.
Offline and travel playback
Jellyfin items can play over VPN when traveling if server bandwidth allows. IPTV live streams still depend on provider geo and concurrent rules — Jellyfin integration does not merge IPTV and Jellyfin into one legal entitlement. Expect IPTV to fail away from home when provider forbids it, while Jellyfin rips may work over your VPN tunnel.
Who should enable Jellyfin integration
Enable if you:
- Already run Jellyfin for owned media
- Want one daily driver app with IPTV Smart Collections
- Need live subtitle/audio controls on mobile and TV for Jellyfin streams
Skip if you are IPTV-only with no self-hosted library — TMDB on Smart Collections may be enough for provider VOD metadata.

Frequently asked questions
Is Jellyfin integration included in Premium?
Yes. Connecting and browsing your Jellyfin server requires an active Premium subscription. GridStreamr does not host Jellyfin for you — you run your own server.
Which platforms support Jellyfin in GridStreamr?
Connect Jellyfin on iPhone, iPad, or Android. Android TV browses and plays servers you already added on phone — there is no add-server flow on TV. Android Auto on aftermarket head units. Apple TV support is on the way.
Does GridStreamr replace the Jellyfin app?
GridStreamr is an alternative client for playback and browsing alongside your IPTV Smart Collections. Many users keep Jellyfin for server admin and use GridStreamr as the daily watch app.
Can I switch subtitles and audio tracks live?
Yes. Choose subtitle language, adjust font size during playback, and switch audio tracks without leaving the player — metadata and tracks come from your Jellyfin server.
Does Jellyfin integration provide IPTV channels?
No. Jellyfin serves your self-hosted media library. IPTV live TV still comes from Xtream or M3U sources you connect separately. GridStreamr does not supply either type of content.
Do I need TMDB if I use Jellyfin?
Jellyfin already stores rich metadata for your files. TMDB in GridStreamr targets IPTV VOD in Smart Collections. Use each where your content lives.
