Responsible use

GridStreamr does not provide IPTV channels, VOD, or playlists. You bring your own authorized Xtream Codes or M3U sources. You are responsible for complying with applicable terms, licenses, and local law.

M3U playlists remain the lingua franca of IPTV — a text file or URL listing stream endpoints, channel names and optional group titles. GridStreamr imports those lists alongside full Xtream Codes accounts so nothing in your setup is second-class. Parse, curate, attach EPG, stream and share from Smart Collections built on your playlists.

How M3U import works in GridStreamr

GridStreamr accepts two import paths under Sources → Regular playlists:

Remote M3U / M3U8 URL

Paste a URL your provider or tool published. GridStreamr fetches the playlist over the network, parses #EXTINF lines for titles and logos, and reads group-title attributes into categories.

Local .m3u file

Upload a file from device storage — useful for offline backups, hobby lists or exports from desktop editors. The same parser runs locally after upload.

Once parsed, channels appear under that playlist's category tree. Long-press any entry to add it to a Smart Collection, same as Xtream channels.

What GridStreamr extracts from M3U

Typical playlist fields GridStreamr uses:

FieldSourceUse in app
Channel name#EXTINF titleDisplay, rename in Smart Collections
Stream URLLine after #EXTINFPlayback
Group titlegroup-title= attributeCategory browsing
Logotvg-logo= when presentChannel grid artwork
EPG hinttvg-id / tvg-name when presentInitial EPG mapping

Provider quality varies. Some M3U files are meticulously tagged; others are bare URLs. That is why Smart Collections plus GridStreamr Global EPG and optional AI enrichment matter for M3U-heavy setups.

M3U inside Smart Collections

M3U channels are first-class citizens in Smart Collections:

  1. Combine M3U and Xtream entries in one curated list
  2. Rename cryptic titles for family-friendly browsing
  3. Reorder so news, sports and kids categories appear first
  4. Manage EPG — attach global guide data when tvg-id is missing or wrong
  5. Share tokenised M3U Plus exports without exposing upstream URLs that embed credentials

Free tier: one regular playlist, one Smart Collection, 20 entries. Premium: unlimited playlists, unlimited collections, 2,000 entries each.

EPG for M3U lineups

M3U rarely ships a usable guide inside the file. GridStreamr does not import a separate provider XMLTV URL into M3U source settings.

GridStreamr Global EPG — in Smart Collection → Manage EPG, map channels to the 50,000+ channel catalog for programme rows independent of the M3U file. Premium adds AI Auto-match EPG (review-before-apply), the full-day timeline, custom EPG configuration, and notification alerts. Free shows current/next on mapped channels.

After mapping, export an XMLTV URL from Manage Shares if you play the collection in TiviMate or Kodi.

Streaming M3U in the built-in player

Playback uses the same IPTV player as Xtream:

  • Category browse and favorites
  • Full-screen live view
  • Premium: multi-audio/subtitles where streams carry multiple tracks
  • Premium: MultiView for multiple live M3U streams (iOS/Android)

M3U does not automatically imply TimeShift — archive requires Xtream-style endpoints. If catch-up matters, connect an Xtream account for those channels or keep M3U for live-only lists.

Exporting and sharing M3U shares

Smart Collection shares generate M3U Plus URLs (get.php?type=m3u_plus style endpoints) backed by virtual credentials — not a re-export of your raw provider URL with embedded passwords.

Recipients configure:

  • M3U Plus URL in VLC, Kodi or TiviMate
  • XMLTV URL from Manage Shares for programme data
  • Or virtual Xtream credentials if the player prefers API login

Your original playlist URL and provider secrets stay private. Shares support expiration and revocation.

Practical M3U workflows

Backup line alongside Xtream primary

Connect Xtream for daily VOD and archive. Add a small M3U backup for critical channels if the panel fails. Merge both into one "Main" Smart Collection; favorites pin the backups near the top.

Hobby / community lists

Local or remote M3U from radio streams, event cameras or club feeds — import as separate playlists, curate a small collection, share read-only token with friends via @username.

Editor export → GridStreamr curation

Some users tidy playlists in desktop tools, export M3U, upload to GridStreamr for mobile/TV playback, global EPG mapping and secure sharing — treating GridStreamr as the distribution layer.

Family slice from a huge list

Import a 5,000-channel M3U but only add 30 channels to a Kids Smart Collection. Hide the rest without maintaining a separate file.

Limits and performance tips

Large M3U files can slow first parse:

  • Split by region or genre at the source if possible
  • Add only needed channels to Smart Collections to keep UI snappy
  • Use Premium 2,000 entry cap planning for mega lists — multiple collections beat one giant list

Search across sources helps find a channel without scrolling entire M3U trees.

Devices

Import and organize M3U on iPhone, iPad, and Android. Android TV plays Smart Collections built on phone (no add-source on TV). Android Auto works on aftermarket head units. Apple TV support is on the way. CarPlay isn’t supported.

Home DVR and M3U

Home DVR records channels from Smart Collections regardless of whether the underlying entry came from M3U or Xtream. Schedule from the app; files land on your Mac, Windows, Linux or Docker storage.

Updating M3U when the provider changes lineups

Remote M3U URLs often change when providers refresh channel numbers or CDN endpoints. GridStreamr does not auto-edit your Smart Collection when the upstream file changes — you stay in control:

  1. Re-fetch or re-import the playlist under Sources when streams break
  2. Compare new categories to your Smart Collection — stale entries may need removal
  3. Re-run Manage EPG mapping if tvg-id values shifted
  4. Re-export share tokens only if virtual credentials were rotated (usually unchanged)

Keeping a raw backup collection with all provider channels and a display collection with 40 curated entries simplifies refresh: update backup, copy deltas to display.

Subtitles and audio on bare M3U streams

Unlike Xtream VOD, M3U entries rarely expose multiple subtitle tracks in metadata. Premium OpenSubtitles search during playback still helps movies if you identify content by title. Live M3U feeds with embedded multi-audio are uncommon — expect single-track unless provider uses adaptive HLS with alternate renditions GridStreamr can expose.

Frequently asked questions

What M3U formats does GridStreamr support?

Remote M3U and M3U8 URLs plus local .m3u files uploaded from your device. Streams are parsed for channel names, group-title categories and logos where present in the playlist.

How many M3U playlists can I add?

Free includes one regular playlist plus one Xtream account. Premium includes unlimited regular playlists and unlimited Xtream accounts.

Can I mix M3U and Xtream in one Smart Collection?

Yes. Add channels from M3U playlists and Xtream accounts into the same Smart Collection, rename them uniformly and share the result as one tokenised lineup.

Does GridStreamr host or sell M3U playlists?

No. You supply playlist URLs or files from sources you are authorized to use. GridStreamr is a player and organizer, not a content provider.

Can I export an M3U share for other players?

Yes. Smart Collection shares include M3U Plus URLs compatible with VLC, Kodi, TiviMate and other players, plus optional XMLTV for EPG.

Why use M3U instead of Xtream Codes?

M3U is simpler when you only need a channel list without VOD API metadata. Xtream is richer for movies, series and archive. Many users connect both — see our comparison blog.
