Set up the PIN

1. Open Settings → Parental Controls
2. Create a 4-digit PIN (pick something memorable; store it in your password manager if needed)
3. Confirm the PIN
4. Optionally review which Smart Collections are marked Locked
5. Test by signing out of a collection and reopening it on the same device

If you forget the PIN, use your GridStreamr account recovery path from the app store account that owns the install — do not share the PIN in household chat threads where kids can read it.

Lock Smart Collections (not the whole app)

Parental controls attach to collections, which matches how people actually watch:

Continue Watching respects locks — titles that belong to a locked collection should not surface as one-tap resumes for kids on that device. After you change locks, browse Continue Watching once as a sanity check on Android TV and tablets.

Recommended household layouts

Layout A — one phone, one kids tablet

• Curator account on the adult phone: all sources + Adult collection (locked) + Kids collection
• Kids tablet signed into the same account or a shared device with only the Kids collection favorited
• PIN required to open Adult
• Prefer a Kids-only share into a secondary player if the tablet should never hold the master login

Layout B — living room Android TV

• Curate on phone; stream on Android TV
• PIN-lock Adult on the TV so the remote cannot wander into restricted categories during movie night
• Keep Family or Kids as the default landing collection

Layout C — guests for the weekend

• Build a temporary Guest collection (sports + news)
• Share with a 24h or 7d token — no PIN needed on their device because the share never included adult categories
• Revoke when they leave

Parental PIN vs secure playlist sharing

PIN is a local gate. Sharing is a scope and credential control. Households that only set a PIN but still paste the real Xtream password into five apps are not actually protected.

Building a kids-safe library step by step

1. Connect your authorized Xtream or M3U source
2. Create Smart Collection Kids
3. Long-press only cartoon / kids / family channels and movies you approve — omit the rest
4. Rename cryptic labels so kids can read them (Nick Jr, not US|KIDS|NICKJR FHD)
5. Attach Global EPG so the guide matches what is on screen
6. Optionally run AI enrichment for logos and cleaner names (Premium + credits)
7. Set PIN → lock Adult (and any overflow collection)
8. Test as a kid would: open the app, try to reach Adult, confirm PIN prompt

What parental controls do not do

Be clear with household expectations:

• They do not rate every stream from your provider automatically
• They do not block websites or other apps on the device
• They do not replace OS-level Screen Time / Family Link
• They do not make illegal sources “safe” — use only authorized content
• They do not stop someone who knows the PIN

Combine PIN locks with device passcodes, supervised accounts on kids' tablets, and OS parental tools.

Android TV remote realities

On Android TV, kids with the remote will mash categories. Mitigations:

• Default the TV to the Family or Kids collection
• PIN-lock Adult so category browsing fails closed
• Avoid leaving the TV signed into an unlocked Adult collection overnight
• Prefer QR-linked accounts so you are not typing the PIN on an on-screen keyboard in front of the room every time — enter PIN when needed, then return to Kids

Maintenance without undoing the locks

• After a provider refresh, spot-check Kids for newly miscategorized adult streams before kids watch
• Remove dead channels monthly; do not “add everything new from Kids category” blindly
• When teens outgrow Kids, create Teen as a middle collection instead of unlocking Adult wholesale
• If someone learns the PIN, rotate it in Settings and treat it like a password change

Accessibility and UX notes

PIN prompts should be reachable with a remote and VoiceOver / TalkBack. Keep collection names obvious (Kids, Adult — PIN) so screen-reader users hear intent before opening. Avoid emoji-only names that read poorly on Android TV.
