Responsible use

GridStreamr does not provide IPTV channels, VOD, or playlists. You bring your own authorized Xtream Codes or M3U sources. You are responsible for complying with applicable terms, licenses, and local law.

The living room is where IPTV either clicks — lean-back guide, remote-friendly categories, stable playback — or frustrates with phone-cast workarounds. GridStreamr for Android TV and Google TV streams Smart Collections only — not the raw Xtream or M3U source tree. Curate on your phone, QR-link the TV, then lean back with EPG and Premium playback already waiting.

Install GridStreamr on Android TV

  1. Open Google Play Store on the TV (or sideload only if you understand the security tradeoffs — prefer Play for updates)
  2. Search GridStreamr and install
  3. Launch the app — you will see a QR code for account linking
  4. On your phone, open GridStreamr signed in to your account
  5. Scan the QR code to link the TV
  6. Your Smart Collections sync to the TV — that is what you watch from

Why QR linking beats TV keyboards

Xtream credentials and long M3U URLs are painful on TV remotes — and Android TV never shows the raw source anyway. GridStreamr's model:

  • Curate on phone — add sources, build Smart Collections, map EPG
  • Watch on TV — browse synced Smart Collections only, with a remote-optimized UI
  • Share to household TVs — @username shares appear after accept on any linked device

Live TV experience on TV

Everything on Android TV starts from a Smart Collection:

  • Browse categories aligned to your curation (not raw provider chaos)
  • Favorites surface top channels
  • Premium EPG timeline fills the screen for schedule browsing
  • TimeShift when Xtream archive exists — critical for time zones and replay
  • MultiView sessions are created on phone, then launched on Android TV when you want split-screen sports

Player controls support multi-audio and subtitles on Premium — pick language tracks on international feeds.

Movies and series on TV

Xtream VOD libraries render with posters and seasons inside your Smart Collection. Continue Watching syncs across devices. Add your free TMDB API key on the phone (Premium) so posters look better on the TV.

Jellyfin (Premium) adds self-hosted movies and series beside IPTV — one app for Friday night rips and Sunday sports.

Jellyfin on Android TV

Connect your Jellyfin server in the mobile app (Settings). On Android TV, browse and play those libraries once they sync — there is no “add server” flow on the TV. Switch subtitles and audio live for distance viewing.

Server should sit on LAN gigabit or stable Wi‑Fi for 1080p direct play; 4K may need Ethernet or transcoding headroom on Jellyfin host.

Home DVR from the couch

Premium users can pair GridStreamr DVR on the TV (Settings → Recording → find on Wi‑Fi) and play recordings from the library. Schedule new jobs from the phone — Android TV does not create recording schedules.

  • Phone: schedule live/VOD from the guide or player
  • TV: pair the DVR host on the same LAN, then browse/play finished recordings
  • Files stay on Mac / Windows / Linux / Docker / NAS — not on the TV’s internal storage

Android TV vs Android Auto (AOSP)

GridStreamr ships two different living-room / cabin experiences:

ProductDeviceInstall
Android TV appChromecast, Shield, Google TV, Sony, etc.Google Play on TV
Android Auto (AOSP)Aftermarket head unitsDownload App code 2611137

Factory Android Automotive dashboards and CarPlay aren’t supported. The TV app and the car head-unit app are different installs.

Apple TV

Apple TV support is on the way. Until then, set up your library on your phone, watch on Android TV, or share a secure playlist into another TV app.

Remote control tips

  • Use D-pad category navigation — collections with clean names help (AI enrichment optional)
  • Pin Favorites on phone; they sort to top on TV
  • Enable EPG notifications on phone for shows you will watch on TV later
  • For shared households, parental PIN locked collections hide adult IPTV categories from kids on TV

Sharing to other TVs in the house

@username share lets another GridStreamr account accept your Smart Collection — useful when each TV profile wants separate favorites but same base lineup.

External TV players (TiviMate on duplicate Shield) can use virtual Xtream credentials + XMLTV URL from Manage Shares without giving real provider password.

Troubleshooting Android TV

Library looks empty

  • Android TV only shows Smart Collections — not your raw Xtream/M3U source
  • On phone: create a collection, add channels, then refresh on the TV

QR link fails

  • Update phone and TV apps to latest versions
  • Same account network — phone needs internet for auth even on LAN

Buffering

  • Try SD stream variant if provider offers tiers
  • Ethernet adapter for Chromecast/Google TV sticks helps

EPG empty

  • Fix mapping on phone → Manage EPG → Global EPG
  • Reopen app to refresh guide cache

7-day trial expired message

  • Upgrade Premium or continue on mobile only until subscribed

Jellyfin unreachable

  • Jellyfin server must be reachable from TV network (local IP or VPN)

Input devices: remotes, gamepads and CEC

Android TV devices differ wildly — Shield remotes, Google TV Chromecast, OEM Sony remotes. GridStreamr follows standard Android TV D-pad focus navigation. Tips:

  • Favorites and collection edits happen on phone — the TV selects and plays collections
  • HDMI-CEC volume from TV remote usually works; in-app volume maps to stream gain
  • Gamepads on Shield sometimes work as D-pad; not officially guaranteed

If focus gets lost after search, press Back once to return to category rail — a common Android TV pattern.

Updating the TV app

Install updates from Google Play on the TV periodically. The changelog calls out TV-specific fixes (guide scrolling, 4K black screen, Jellyfin track selection). Phone and TV can temporarily run different versions during staggered store rollout — if QR link fails after an update, update both sides.

  1. Phone: add Xtream or M3U
  2. Phone: build a Smart Collection + EPG map (required — TV has nothing without it)
  3. TV: install GridStreamr, QR link
  4. TV: verify live playback and guide timeline (Premium)
  5. Optional on phone: connect Jellyfin + schedule DVR; on TV: browse Jellyfin and pair DVR to play recordings

Stream on Android TV

Free includes a 7-day TV window. Premium unlocks unlimited TV use with full EPG and integrations.

Frequently asked questions

How do I sign in on Android TV?

Install GridStreamr from Google Play on your Android TV or Google TV device. Open the app and link your phone by scanning the QR code shown on TV — use the same GridStreamr account as on mobile.

Is Android TV free?

Free accounts get a 7-day full-app window from first signed-in open on Android TV. Premium includes Android TV with no time limit alongside unlimited Smart Collections and full EPG.

Does Android TV show my raw Xtream or M3U source?

No. The Android TV app watches Smart Collections only. Add sources and build collections on your phone (or tablet), then open those collections on the TV after QR sign-in.

Why is my Android TV library empty?

You need at least one Smart Collection with channels or VOD in it. Connecting a source on the phone is not enough — add entries to a collection, then sync to the TV.

Can I add sources or edit Smart Collections on Android TV?

No. Add Xtream/M3U sources, build collections, map EPG, and connect Jellyfin on your phone. The TV app selects collections and plays — it does not add sources or edit lineups.

Does Android TV support Jellyfin and DVR?

On Premium, browse Jellyfin libraries you already connected on phone, and pair Home DVR to play recordings. Schedule new recordings from the mobile app — not from the TV.

Is this Android Automotive or AAOS?

No. GridStreamr on Android TV targets television devices (Android TV / Google TV). In-car experience is Android Auto on AOSP aftermarket head units only — a separate app install.

Does GridStreamr provide IPTV channels on Android TV?

No. You connect your own Xtream or M3U sources. GridStreamr is the player and organizer, not a content provider.
