How to Add EPG to an IPTV Playlist — Global EPG and XMLTV

An IPTV playlist without an EPG is a drawer of unlabeled cables: you can plug something in, but you cannot tell what is on. This guide shows how to attach a usable programme guide to Xtream Codes and M3U sources in GridStreamr — using Xtream provider EPG where available, Global EPG mapping, Premium AI auto-match, timezone fixes and Smart Collection hygiene so Now/Next (and full-day schedules on Premium) match reality.

What “adding EPG” actually means

You are connecting three layers:

1. Streams — channel URLs from your Xtream or M3U source
2. Identity — which logical channel is “BBC One HD” vs a random UK|BBC1 dump label
3. Schedule — programme titles and times from Xtream provider EPG or Global EPG

If identity is wrong, the schedule looks “broken” even when the guide data is fine. Fix identity first.

Before you start

• GridStreamr on phone or tablet (easiest for mapping)
• At least one Xtream or M3U source imported
• A Smart Collection with the channels you care about
• Know your local timezone

Path A — GridStreamr Global EPG (recommended default)

Global EPG is a large channel catalog (50,000+ entries) you map onto your playlist channels.

Steps

1. Open the Smart Collection you watch daily
2. Tap Manage EPG (or equivalent Global EPG entry)
3. Pick a messy channel → search the Global catalog for the real station
4. Confirm the match (country + name + logo cues)
5. Repeat for flagship channels first (news, sports, kids) — not all 2,000 dumps
6. Verify Now/Next on three mapped channels

Mapping strategy that saves hours

Do not try to perfectly map an entire multi-provider mega-list in one sitting. Map the living-room collection; ignore unused dump categories.

Path B — Keep Xtream provider EPG where it works

Xtream panels often expose programme data through the player API, not as an XMLTV file you paste into GridStreamr.

What GridStreamr does

1. You add Xtream credentials
2. Channels get provider EPG URLs built from host / username / password / stream id
3. The player requests provider EPG (and related actions) for Now/Next

There is no source-settings field to import a separate provider xmltv.php URL. If the panel’s EPG is empty or wrong, map Global EPG for those channels instead.

When provider EPG shines

• Panel maintains accurate stream ↔ programme IDs
• Niche regional channels Global EPG may not prioritize
• You only need Now/Next on a few Xtream-backed sports feeds

When provider EPG disappoints

• Empty or stale listings
• Wrong timezone baked into programme times
• IDs that never match after a provider refresh

Fall back to Global EPG mapping for the channels you care about.

Path C — Mix both + export XMLTV

Healthy households often:

• Keep Xtream provider EPG where the panel is accurate
• Map Global EPG for major brands and M3U channels
• Use Premium AI Auto-match EPG (review-before-apply) for bulk suggestions
• Store the result inside one Smart Collection so every device sees the same guide
• From Manage Shares → XMLTV details, copy an XMLTV URL for TiviMate / Kodi — that is an export, not an import

Fixing the classic EPG problems

1. Everything is N hours early/late

1. Open Settings → EPG → timezone
2. Set your actual local zone (not the provider’s country if you travel)
3. Refresh guide data
4. Re-check Now/Next

If only some channels are wrong, those are bad mappings — remap those IDs rather than changing the whole timezone again.

2. Wrong show on the right channel logo

The logo matched, the schedule ID did not. Remap that channel in Manage EPG. Logos can look identical across regional variants.

3. Guide empty on Xtream or after mapping

• Xtream provider EPG returns no listings for that stream — map Global EPG
• Wrong Global EPG row assigned (wrong country / regional variant)
• Network / VPN blocking provider or GridStreamr EPG requests
• Channel never mapped — assign a guide entry manually

4. Free vs Premium schedule depth

Mapping still matters on Free — Now/Next is useless if identity is wrong.

EPG inside Smart Collections (why this matters)

Raw provider categories reshuffle. Your Smart Collection is the stable place to:

• Keep mapped IDs after provider renames (re-check periodically)
• Share a guide-aware lineup via virtual credentials
• Sync the same mappings to Android TV, phone and tablet

Logos and names while you are here

EPG mapping often reveals how broken upstream labels are. Pair guide work with:

• Manual renames on flagship channels
• AI channel logos for missing artwork (review before apply)
• Broader AI IPTV enrichment when the whole bouquet is chaos

A correct guide on a channel named ||UK|| BBC 1 FHD [VIP] still feels broken. Clean the label.

Android TV and lean-back EPG

After phone mapping:

1. QR-link Android TV
2. Open the same collection
3. Use the TV guide / timeline for living-room browsing
4. Prefer Premium full-day EPG on the big screen — that is where schedule UX pays off

Catch-up and EPG together

TimeShift / catch-up uses provider archive metadata, not Global EPG alone. A perfect guide does not invent catch-up if the Xtream panel never enabled archive on that channel. Conversely, archive can exist even when guide titles are ugly — map EPG for discovery, rely on archive flags for rewind.

Sharing playlists with XMLTV

When you share securely, recipients often need:

• Virtual Xtream credentials or M3U Plus URL
• An XMLTV URL for their external player (TiviMate, etc.)

Curate and map in GridStreamr first; then export. Do not hand out the master panel password “so their EPG works.”

Verification checklist

• Smart Collection exists with channels you watch
• At least 10 flagship channels mapped (Global EPG or working Xtream provider EPG)
• Timezone matches where you watch
• Now/Next plausible on three channels
• Premium users: full-day grid looks coherent
• Android TV (if used) shows the same mappings after sync
• Shared lineups include guide data without exposing real passwords
