Premium EPG notification alerts turn the programme guide into a proactive assistant: get a push before a show, match or news block starts — on channels you already mapped in a Smart Collection.

What EPG notifications are for

Live TV is easy to miss when guides are incomplete or buried three menus deep. Alerts solve the "I forgot kickoff" problem without leaving a TV on all day.

GridStreamr's alerts sit on top of Global EPG / custom XMLTV mapping. If a channel has no programme row, there is nothing useful to notify about — fix mapping first.

How to set an alert

1. Open a Smart Collection with EPG mapped
2. Browse the full-day timeline (Premium)
3. Choose a programme, channel or sports team follow pattern supported in your build
4. Enable the alert — and accept the iOS/Android notification permission when prompted
5. When the push arrives, open GridStreamr and tune from your curated list

Alert hygiene tips

• Prefer alerts on a sports or news collection, not the entire provider dump
• Re-check mappings after provider refreshes — wrong EPG rows create wrong alerts
• Disable noisy categories during travel if hotel Wi-Fi already drains the battery
• Pair with the home screen widget for glanceable now/next between alerts

Notifications vs DVR vs TimeShift

Many households use all three: alert → watch live or TimeShift → DVR series of record.

Player UX versus library control

When you evaluate any IPTV workflow, separate player UX from library control. GridStreamr is built so curation happens once in Smart Collections and playback can stay in-app or move to another player via secure sharing. That split is what lets a household keep one source of truth while individuals still pick their favourite lean-back skin on a single TV.

Provider playlists drift

Provider playlists change without warning — channels rename, logos vanish, categories reshuffle. A durable setup assumes you will re-map EPG, re-run AI enrichment when needed and keep family or sports shortlists in dedicated collections rather than trusting the raw provider tree forever. Treat the provider category browser as a warehouse, not a living room UI.

Phone curates, TV consumes

Households with mixed devices should curate on phone (fast typing, AI review) and watch on Android TV or tablet after sync. That split keeps lean-back screens clean while power users retain full control. QR sign-in on TV exists so you are not entering Xtream passwords with a D-pad every month.

Free versus Premium planning

Always verify Premium vs Free limits on pricing before promising a household workflow. Free is enough to prove Xtream/M3U import and one Smart Collection; multi-provider homes, full EPG timelines, DVR and Jellyfin typically need Premium. Confirm 7-day trial details in-app — terms can change by store region.

Rights and responsibility

Legal note: recording, sharing and catch-up only apply to content and services you are authorized to use. GridStreamr is software — not a subscription for live TV channels. If a relative asks for "the login," give them a revocable virtual share instead of your panel password.

Control plane coexistence

If a competitor app already feels perfect for lean-back playback alone, you can still use GridStreamr as the control plane: clean the lineup, attach EPG, export virtual credentials or M3U Plus and keep watching in the player you prefer. Many power users run this hybrid for years without drama.

Homelab operability

Document your pairing IPs, DVR volumes and share tokens the same way you document NAS credentials. Homelab IPTV fails more often from forgotten LAN details than from player bugs. DHCP reservations for the DVR host and a written note of port 8787 save weekend troubleshooting.

Sports and event hygiene

For sports nights, prefer a dedicated Smart Collection, MultiView where useful and EPG alerts for kickoff — rather than scrolling a 5,000-row provider category under pressure. After the event, prune backup feeds you added "just in case" so next week starts clean.

Quality labels are hints

Stream labels like HD, FHD and 4K are marketing hints inside channel names. Keep one quality tier per logical channel in curated lists, and fall back to a lower tier when travel Wi-Fi collapses. See also stream quality labels.

EPG before notifications

Alerts, widgets and "what's on" conversations only work after guide rows map to the channels you actually play. If now/next looks wrong, fix timezone/offset and mapping before blaming notifications — start with EPG offsets and the EPG feature page.

Sharing without password leaks

Family sharing should never mean screenshotting panel credentials into a chat thread. Create a Smart Collection with only what that person needs, share it, and revoke when a device is lost. XMLTV URLs travel with M3U Plus when the destination player needs a guide.

DVR storage realism

Home DVR is liberating until disks fill. Budget storage from real bitrates × hours × retention, put recordings on a dedicated volume, and decide whether Docker on NAS or a mini-PC fits your noise/power budget. Guides for Windows, Mac, Linux and Docker cover the common hosts.

Jellyfin stays the file server

Jellyfin remains excellent for movies and series you already store. It is not a substitute Xtream panel. Use Jellyfin in GridStreamr when you want one client for library + live, and keep live credentials in IPTV sources where they belong.

Buffering is usually networked

Before installing five "faster" players, test Ethernet, quiet the Wi-Fi neighbourhood, disable a flaky VPN hop and try a lower-bitrate sibling channel. The buffering guide is intentionally boring — because boring checklists fix more streams than APK hopping.

Parental controls need curation

PIN locks only help if Kids collections were built by a human who verified rows. After provider refreshes, spot-check before kids watch. Combine parental controls with a locked-down home widget on shared tablets.
