Bring your own OpenSubtitles account

1. Register a free account at opensubtitles.com (or the current OpenSubtitles consumer site)
2. In GridStreamr open Settings → General
3. Enter your OpenSubtitles username and password
4. Start a movie or episode → open the subtitle control → search
5. Pick a language / release that matches the running title

Subtitles are matched against currently playing content. You stay inside the player — no sideloading SRT files through a laptop for every title.

GridStreamr does not sell OpenSubtitles VIP plans or ship a shared company login. Using your own account keeps quotas and terms tied to you.

Multi-audio and embedded tracks

Many Xtream VOD and live events include multiple audio PIDs (original, local dub, commentary). On Premium:

1. Start playback in the IPTV player
2. Tap the audio icon
3. Select the track you want
4. Optionally open subtitles for hard-of-hearing or translation tracks muxed in the stream

If the selector is empty, the source simply did not include extra tracks — OpenSubtitles cannot invent alternate audio, only text.

Styling for phones, tablets and TVs

Living-room viewing needs larger captions than a phone commute. Premium subtitle styling lets you tune:

• Font size for 10-foot UI on Android TV
• Colors that survive bright sports graphics
• Background/box contrast for light scenes

Changes apply in the player so you can fix readability without leaving the title.

Jellyfin and IPTV in one subtitle workflow

If you use Jellyfin integration, subtitle behavior mirrors what you expect from a media server client:

• Embedded and external tracks appear in the same menu
• GridStreamr can fetch SRT on demand (lazy loading) for large libraries

Pair with TMDB for a complete VOD experience

Subtitles answer "what are they saying?" TMDB enrichment answers "what is this title?" Enable both on Premium:

1. Paste your TMDB API key for posters and metadata
2. Sign in to OpenSubtitles for language coverage
3. Browse a Smart Collection that looks like a catalog and plays with captions

AI live enrichment remains separate — it cleans channel names and logos, not movie dialogue.

Troubleshooting

OpenSubtitles returns no results

• Confirm username/password under Settings → General
• Try alternate spellings / years; provider titles are often messy — rename in the Smart Collection or rely on TMDB match first
• Check OpenSubtitles account status / rate limits

Tracks missing on a title that used to have them

• Provider may have swapped encodes
• For Jellyfin, confirm the server still lists the external files
• Update the app — subtitle ID handling improved in recent mobile releases

Android TV focus oddities

• Current builds improved OpenSubtitles and track selector focus; update from the store / sideload channel you use for TV

Want captions on live news

• Prefer channels that embed subtitles; OpenSubtitles is primarily a VOD search workflow, not a live closed-captioning service for every stream

Accessibility and household use

Multi-audio and subtitles help:

Combine with parental PIN locks on Smart Collections when kids' devices should not open adult libraries — configure under Settings → Parental Controls.

Choosing between embedded subs and OpenSubtitles

Use this decision order while a title plays:

1. Embedded / provider tracks first — already timed to the encode; lowest friction
2. Jellyfin external files — if the library already stores SRTs beside media
3. OpenSubtitles search — when the stream is dialogue-heavy and ships with nothing usable
4. Skip — live sports with burned-in score bugs rarely need a second caption layer

Picking a poorly synced OpenSubtitles file is worse than no captions. Skim the first minute after enabling a download; if dialogue leads or lags badly, try the next result or fall back to an embedded track.

Languages, households and defaults

Mixed-language homes often standardize on:

• Audio in the original language when available
• Subtitles in the household reading language
• A second saved preference for kids' profiles (simpler vocabulary tracks when the provider offers them)

GridStreamr does not invent dubbing. If your Xtream VOD encode only has one audio PID, multi-audio will show a single row — use OpenSubtitles for translation instead.

On Android TV, set subtitle size large enough for a 10-foot viewing distance before guests arrive; styling changes are easier to judge on the big screen than on a phone preview.

Live TV vs VOD expectations

For catch-up programmes opened via TimeShift, subtitle availability still depends on what the archive encode includes — same rules as live/VOD.

Privacy notes for OpenSubtitles login

• Store credentials only in GridStreamr Settings on devices you control
• Prefer a dedicated OpenSubtitles password (not your email password reused everywhere)
• Sign out on shared demo devices
• Remember searches reveal which titles you play to the OpenSubtitles service under their terms — that is inherent to any online subtitle lookup
