Self-Hosting IPTV with Jellyfin — One Client, Two Libraries

How you can run Jellyfin for your file library beside IPTV Smart Collections in GridStreamr Premium — without treating Jellyfin as an Xtream panel.

8 min read

Responsible use

GridStreamr does not provide IPTV channels, VOD, or playlists. You bring your own authorized Xtream Codes or M3U sources. You are responsible for complying with applicable terms, licenses, and local law.

If you self-host, you probably already run Jellyfin for movies and series — and keep IPTV in a second app. Two remotes, two libraries, twice the friction. GridStreamr Premium Jellyfin integration puts your server library next to Smart Collections so you can reach for one app in the evening, whether you want owned files or playlist IPTV.

Correct architecture

Each layer has a clear job. Keeping them separate saves you headaches later.

LayerResponsibility
JellyfinMovies/series files on NAS/PC, metadata, users
Xtream / M3ULive TV (and provider VOD) credentials
Smart CollectionsCurated IPTV lineups + EPG

Do not force live Xtream into Jellyfin "Live TV tuner" workflows unless you already know that stack — it is a different problem from playlist IPTV.

Setup outline

  1. Finish Jellyfin libraries (movies, shows)
  2. In GridStreamr Premium: add server URL + user
  3. Keep IPTV sources separate; curate live into Smart Collections
  4. Optional: map Home DVR recordings into a Jellyfin library folder
  5. Lean-back on Android TV with the same account

How-to: Jellyfin + IPTV in one app. Launch notes: Jellyfin integration blog.

What you get in the client

Once connected, you can:

  • Browse movies/series with Jellyfin posters, plots, cast
  • Stream with GridStreamr's player stack
  • Switch subtitle and audio tracks live
  • Resume sync across GridStreamr devices
  • Switch to IPTV live, EPG, TimeShift and DVR from Smart Collections

What GridStreamr is not doing

  • Replacing Jellyfin's admin UI
  • Turning Jellyfin into an Xtream Codes panel
  • Uploading your library to a GridStreamr cloud

Free vs Premium

Jellyfin connection requires Premium. Free still covers basic IPTV import within Free caps (1 Xtream, 1 M3U, 1 Smart Collection × 20 entries).

Homelab tips

  • Keep Jellyfin and DVR on Ethernet
  • Use a reverse proxy only if you understand exposure risks
  • Separate Kids IPTV collections with parental PIN even when Jellyfin has its own parental features

Networking notes

  • Phone and TV must reach the Jellyfin URL you configured (LAN hostname vs IP vs reverse proxy)
  • Certificates matter if you use HTTPS with a private CA — broken trust looks like "Jellyfin won't connect"
  • Android Auto AOSP can play Jellyfin on supported builds; CarPlay is not supported

Subtitles and audio

Jellyfin embedded tracks plus Premium OpenSubtitles search cover different cases: server-provided subs vs online search for IPTV VOD. Live IPTV audio still depends on what the stream offers.

Keeping libraries mentally separate

When someone asks "where is the movie?" answer with the layer: Jellyfin file vs IPTV VOD title in a Smart Collection. Mixing the words "playlist" for both creates support confusion.

Frequently asked questions

Does GridStreamr host Jellyfin for me?

No. You run your own Jellyfin server. GridStreamr Premium connects as a client beside your IPTV Smart Collections.

Does Jellyfin replace Xtream or M3U?

No. Jellyfin serves your self-hosted media library. Live IPTV still comes from Xtream or M3U sources you connect separately.

Is Jellyfin integration free?

Connecting and browsing Jellyfin in GridStreamr requires Premium. Free can still use IPTV within Free caps without Jellyfin.

Which platforms support Jellyfin in GridStreamr?

iPhone, iPad, Android, Android TV, and Android Auto on aftermarket AOSP units. Apple TV support is coming — today you can curate on your phone and watch on Android TV.

Can I put DVR recordings into Jellyfin?

Yes — point a Jellyfin library folder at your Home DVR recordings path. GridStreamr does not cloud-host those files.

Is this an official Jellyfin partnership?

GridStreamr is a client that speaks to your server. Do not assume an official partnership badge unless GridStreamr states one.
