IPTV EPG Explained — Guides, Global EPG and Mapping
What an IPTV programme guide is, why provider guides break, and how you can use GridStreamr Global EPG, Free vs Premium timelines, and XMLTV exports for other players.
Responsible use
GridStreamr does not provide IPTV channels, VOD, or playlists. You bring your own authorized Xtream Codes or M3U sources. You are responsible for complying with applicable terms, licenses, and local law.
You open live TV and see a wall of logos — but not what's actually on. That's what an IPTV EPG (electronic programme guide) fixes: what's playing now, what's next, and — on Premium — a full day of listings you can scroll through.
Why the guide from your provider often fails
If you've used IPTV for a while, you've probably seen empty guides, wrong shows, or times that are hours off. Common reasons:
- The guide doesn't match the channels in your list
- Your provider's package barely includes a guide
- Listings stop updating for days
- You mix two providers and end up with two different guide systems
In GridStreamr you fix this inside a Smart Collection: keep the channels you care about, then attach a guide that fits your list. Connecting a source does not auto-match Global EPG — you map it yourself (or, on Premium, run AI Auto-match and approve the suggestions).
Two places guide data can come from

You can mix both in the same collection — for example keep sports on your provider's guide and map everything else to Global EPG.
How you attach Global EPG
- Open the Smart Collection you actually watch
- Go to Manage EPG (or set EPG source on a channel)
- Choose GridStreamr Global EPG
- Search and pick the right station — country matters (the wrong “BBC One” region shows the wrong schedule)
Start with favorites and sports. You don't need to map every unused channel on day one.

What you'll see while watching
In a Smart Collection, Free shows now and next when the channel has a guide. Premium unlocks the full-day timeline so you can plan ahead. If your Xtream provider also offers catch-up, TimeShift can play from the same guide context — only when that channel's archive exists.
Custom EPG configuration (Premium)
Premium lets you fine-tune which guide each channel uses after your provider reshuffles names or regions. When the lineup changes, revisit Manage EPG instead of rebuilding the whole collection.
Notification alerts (Premium mobile)
You can get a push before a show, match, or news block starts — on channels you've already mapped. Alerts are not on Free and not a TV-system alarm.
Sharing the guide with other players (XMLTV)
Watch the guide inside GridStreamr after you map it — that's the main path. If you share a collection and a recipient's other app needs a guide URL, open Manage Shares → XMLTV details and copy the export with M3U Plus or virtual credentials.
That XMLTV link is an export. You do not paste a provider guide URL into GridStreamr source settings.
Home widget now/next
From v2.2.3, you can pin channels from a Smart Collection to an iOS/Android home widget (Settings → Home widget) for a quick glance at what's on. It's for convenience — not parental controls.
If the guide looks wrong
- Check your phone's timezone
- Make sure you linked the correct station (same name, wrong country is a classic miss)
- Try Global EPG vs your Xtream provider's EPG for that channel
- After your provider updates their list, spot-check a few favorites
Wrong mapping often looks like a timezone problem.
Quick tips
- Clean messy channel names before you map when you can
- Map Sports first — wrong fight or match times hurt the most
- After a provider refresh, re-check favorites even if names look unchanged
- If you export XMLTV for a share recipient, have them refresh their player's guide the same day

Does GridStreamr EPG unlock channels I do not have?
No. Global EPG is only a schedule catalog. You map it to channels from sources you already connected. It does not give you new streams.
What EPG do Free users get?
What's on now and what's next, when a channel has guide data. Premium unlocks the full-day timeline, Custom EPG Configuration, and mobile notification alerts.
What is GridStreamr Global EPG?
A catalog of 50,000+ channel schedules you can attach to channels in your Smart Collections when your Xtream provider's guide is missing or wrong.
Do I need to export EPG to another app?
Usually no — watch the guide in GridStreamr after you map it. If you share a collection and someone else's player needs a guide URL, copy XMLTV from Manage Shares with M3U Plus or virtual credentials. That export is not pasted into GridStreamr source settings.
Why does the guide look shifted by an hour?
Usually your phone's timezone is wrong, or you linked the wrong guide to that channel. Fix the mapping in Manage EPG and check device time settings first.
Are EPG notification alerts on Free?
No. Alerts are Premium and mobile-only. Your phone will also ask you to allow notifications for GridStreamr — accept that prompt or no push will appear.
