IPTV DVR Explained — Record to Storage You Control

You want to keep last night's match, a news special, or a movie from your collection — on your disk, not someone else's cloud. That is what IPTV DVR is for: recording live TV (and often VOD titles from your collections) onto hardware you control.

DVR vs TimeShift vs "cloud DVR"

These three options solve different problems. Pick the one that matches what you actually need tonight.

Use TimeShift when you missed the first half hour. Use Home DVR when you want a file that can outlive the archive window, sit next to Jellyfin, or survive a provider reshuffle.

Why self-hosted matters for IPTV

If you have been using IPTV for a while, you already know the pain points: playlists change overnight, concurrent-stream limits bite during sports, and cloud DVR subscriptions stack on top of a bill you already pay. Self-hosted DVR gives you:

• Direct file access — copy, archive, or import elsewhere
• No per-GB cloud fees beyond the disk you already own
• Curation-aware recording — schedule from cleaned Smart Collections, not a 3,000-row warehouse

How GridStreamr Home DVR works

You install a small DVR service on a Mac, PC, or NAS — then you set up recordings from the GridStreamr mobile app, not by living in the local browser dashboard. The host just runs the jobs and writes files to your disk.

Pair once

1. Download from /download/dvr (.pkg, .exe, or Docker)
2. Leave the service running on your LAN (port 8787)
3. On your phone: Settings → DVR → Find on Wi‑Fi (or enter http://YOUR-LAN-IP:8787)
4. Enter the one-time pairing code from the DVR host and finish Premium pairing

After that, your phone is the remote for scheduling. Closing a browser tab on the host does not stop recordings — as long as the machine is awake and the stream is reachable, jobs keep going.

Schedule from the mobile app

This is the everyday path:

1. Open a Smart Collection with the channels or titles you care about
2. Tap a live channel (or use record while you're already watching in the player)
3. Pick a programme from the guide when EPG is mapped, or set a custom start/end
4. Confirm the job — it lands on your paired DVR host

You can also browse channels from the in-app DVR picker, record now, schedule one-shots, or set a custom window for repeats where the schedule sheet allows it. Away from home, Cloud Relay keeps that control in your pocket without exposing the DVR to the internet.

What the local dashboard is for

The browser UI at http://YOUR-LAN-IP:8787 is useful for install checks, storage path, logs, and the occasional manual job. You do not need it open to record from your phone day to day.

Install options

Prefer Ethernet and a DHCP reservation for the host. Sleeping laptops miss scheduled jobs.

What you can record

From the app, against paired Smart Collections, you can record:

• Live TV channels from your Xtream or M3U sources
• Movies and series titles exposed through those collections
• Guide-based jobs when EPG is mapped, or custom time windows

We don't invent streams. If a channel is broken in the collection, the recording job fails the same way live playback would.

Cloud Relay — private DVR, remote control

From a security perspective, Cloud Relay is what lets you keep Home DVR fully private. Your recorder never needs inbound ports, port forwarding, or a public IP. It stays on your LAN; the host only opens an outbound secure tunnel for control.

That is the whole difference versus exposing a dashboard to the internet: you still get almost every remote operation you need — schedule, monitor, cancel, check that the host is online — while playback and file download stay off Relay. Recordings never leave your disk through Cloud Relay.

No cloud vault. No streaming CDN. Just control messages — so your DVR can stay locked down.

Storage realism

HD sports fills disks fast. Size your volumes from typical bitrate × hours × retention weeks. Put recordings on a dedicated share, not the OS volume. If you also run Jellyfin, pointing a library folder at the recordings path is a common homelab pattern — see Jellyfin integration.

Rights and responsibility

Only record what your subscription and local law allow. Do not redistribute recordings. Software cannot grant content rights.

• NAS Docker when the NAS is already always-on
• Mini-PC when you want GPU-less simplicity and a spare box
